The Importance of a Creative Hobby

Imagine this: You’re at home on the weekend and have finished all your homework and chores for the day. Now you have the whole evening to do whatever you’d like—but you’re bored and don’t know what to do. (I’ve been in this situation more times than I can count.) And now, how many of you, in this situation, would decide to go on your phone, iPad, or computer to scroll on social media? I know I would.

However, once you’re on your device, three minutes turn into thirty, and then an hour, and before you know it, you’ve scrolled your entire evening away! I don’t know about you, but at this point, I would feel both physically and mentally drained, having spent hours doing something that did not benefit me in any way.

In this age where everyone seems to be a victim of doomscrolling on either Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube Shorts, having a hobby that can genuinely bring you joy and fulfillment is so important. Having something to do after a long day when you’re stressed, or just bored, can have such a meaningful impact on your life.

Many people label themselves as “not creative,” “not skilled,” or “not talented” enough to create anything meaningful. I find this ideology so harmful because it creates a wall in your mind and prevents you from trying new things

As humans, each of us is creative, though we may exhibit it in different ways. It is an innate part of all of us; you simply realize it and use it to its fullest extent. As an artist, pianist, and writer, I believe that creative hobbies are for everyone and anyone, and they can improve your life in so many ways.

Developing New Skills

As Albert Einstein once said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” By practising a creative hobby, you can experiment and generate new ideas while also gaining new, unexpected skills and life experiences.

When I was young, my parents enrolled me in piano, which I continue to this day. Throughout my piano journey, I have learned many things, like discipline, perseverance, and stress management. Since it takes a lot of dedication and effort to master an instrument, I had to practise each day, overcoming challenges and never giving up. Furthermore, by participating in piano competitions, I learned how to adopt a positive way of thinking and handle failure in an appropriate and mature way.

Along with piano, sketching and painting have been an integral part of my life from a young age. Through drawing, I’ve developed a strong attention to detail and a clear understanding of the composition of things and how they interact with each other.

Lastly, my love for writing has helped me improve my linguistic abilities and my communication skills. By writing blog posts like this one and short stories of my own, I can effectively communicate my thoughts.

While hobbies may not seem that relevant, they have helped me succeed by benefiting me with a strong skill set. Because of my creative hobbies, I have better concentration, memory, and much more.

Choosing Entertainment & Relaxation

For many, creative hobbies are a form of entertainment and relaxation. When I’m drawing, I can let my thoughts wander. My mind shuts down and enters a “flow state”. I momentarily forget about my worries and enter a calmer state of mind. For many, art can be a way to cope with stress, problems, or even past trauma. This is why I believe that art and creativity are such powerful things. They not only bring people together but also allow individuals to heal, develop, and evolve.

When we were young, we would always draw or dance, but as we became older, it seems that so much of our creativity and imagination have drained away due to the struggles of growing up.

As someone who loves to create, I find great joy in the arts, particularly drawing. Although I do not draw as much as I used to, whenever I do, it is always super fun. Lately, I enjoy finding a reference image on Pinterest and copying it using coloured pencil. You can enhance your creative experience by making yourself some food or putting on your favourite songs or a podcast. You may find that doing something creative can be just as, if not more, fun as scrolling on social media, and it’s much more rewarding.

Practising Self-Expression

Creative hobbies are an excellent way to express yourself. You may even learn more about your identity. As the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Whether you’re performing a dance routine, drawing a portrait, or performing a piano piece, you can express things you otherwise weren’t able to put into words. The materials you choose when drawing, the notes you play on the piano, and even the words you use while writing can all say a lot about who you are as a person. Sometimes, you may even learn things about yourself that you may not have expected!

After reading this blog post, I sincerely hope that you take the time, even if only for a few minutes, to engage in something creative. Take a pencil and paper to doodle, learn your favourite song on an instrument, or write a short story inspired by your own experiences. Whatever you choose to do, I promise you with utmost confidence that it will benefit you in so many ways.
