How My Brother Inspired Me to Write

Writing is a popular hobby, and every writer has their own story of how they began writing. I started writing after my brother inspired me. He is my role model and still teaches me things to this day.

When I was very young, my brother read me picture books, and I loved them. When I was five, I began to write my own, simple stories. They generally involved two mischievous cats, Bone and Trouble. I continued to write about these characters until I was eight. I read other books as I wrote my books to increase my vocabulary. My brother would check every one of my stories, help me write them, and teach me better grammar. He even brought me books on writing from the library.

My brother knew writing was my hobby and helped me turn it into my passion. Eventually, he showed me how there were more ways to write than just stories. He introduced me to poetry, blogging, and songwriting. I tried out all of these, and though I liked story writing best, I practiced these other forms of writing to hone my skills.

One day, I lost my backpack, which had at least half the stories I had written in it. I came home crying, but my brother comforted me with his warm embrace and words of encouragement. He told me we would rewrite the stories better than they were before. My brother never broke his word, so we rewrote the stories for most of the following week.

My brother was great at drawing and suggested that we make comic strips together. He showed me Calvin and Hobbes, and though I did not understand many of its jokes, I found it funny. We began making comic strips in the style of Calvin and Hobbes, involving Bob and his pet lion, Sam. My brother would draw the pictures, and I would write the words. I also learned to draw from my brother as we made these comics. I shared these comics with my classmates, and they liked them.

I always get stressed when I get too much schoolwork, so my brother introduced me to journaling. I would write down all my feelings in the journal and leave them there. It worked, and I began journaling daily. I would write down everything I did in my journal before I slept. I sometimes added pictures, thanks to my brother teaching me to draw.

My brother is my role model and friend. He made me what I am today. He taught me how to write, helped me spread my writing, and encouraged me to keep going when I lost my stories. My brother also turned my hobby of writing into a passion and taught me ways to write better. He even helped me manage my stress by journaling. Overall, my brother is a positive influence on me, a great role model, and helped me get into writing.
